Bill,

One thing you might want to check is that there is ELF binary support in 
  your kernel configuration.  Someone had mentioned that this is not 
explicitly mentioned in the guide and it will cause the error you are 
seeing.  This oversight has been fixed in the version 3 preview of the 
guide.  If you would like to work with version 3 go to: 
http://www.happy-monkey.net/pocket/preview/ and choose either the HTML 
or the PDF version.
