Thanks Rainer for your reply.

I agree that the problem is most likely due to the non-standard root 
disk location of sda5.  Haranath.T, you will need kernel support for 
whatever kind of device it is.  If the kernel can't mount the device 
that might explain the error about not initializing the console.  The 
root filesystem must be mounted so that you can access /dev/console.
