[pocket-linux] use CD or USB external hard disk instead?

Hey list,

In the chapter 2 of the excellent "Pocket Linux Guide", it says to follow
the guide we need 2 diskettes. Unfortunately, both of my PCs does not
support floppy and some commands I think are for floppy disk. Please correct
me if I misunderstand this. If I understand it right, my question is that
can I use CD or USB external hard disk instead? How can I alter the shell
commands to acomplish the goal please?

I would really appreciate it if someone can assist me?
